10 people — including three children — were killed in a house fire in Pennsylvania, state police say

The victims range in age from 5 to 79 years old. according to the authorities.

Nescopeck is approximately 95 miles northwest of Philadelphia.

Authorities responded to the scene of a two-story house fire shortly before 3 a.m. Friday, according to a public information release from state police. Three adults got out safely, while the 10 victims were found dead inside.

“Firefighters made a valiant effort to enter the home in the back, but were pushed back by the flames and intense heat,” State Police Lt. Col. Derek Felsman said at a news conference Friday morning.

The victims were identified by state police as Dale Baker, 19; Star Baker, 22; David Daubert Sr., 79; Brian Daubert, 42; Shannon Daubert, 45; Laura Daubert, 47; and Marian Slusser, 54. The three children killed were identified as two boys, ages 5 and 6, and a girl, age 7.

“We are using many of the department’s assets to ensure a full and thorough investigation into this fatal fire,” Felsman said. The home was “completely destroyed” by the flames, state police said.

When asked if authorities were conducting a criminal investigation into the fire, Felsman responded that “it is an arson investigation at this time.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Luzerne County District Attorney Sam Sanguedolce told CNN.

“If the fire marshals determine the cause is intentional and arson, we will initiate a criminal arson investigation,” he said.

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf said he was “heartbroken” by the loss of life.

“Our prayers are with their loved ones,” the governor has written on Twitter. “Many thanks to the first responders who rushed to the scene.”

The American Red Cross said it was responding to the needs of people displaced by the fire through financial support and other services, including mental health resources for those affected and first responders.

“As this situation continues to unfold, we are committed to the Nescopeck community and, in coordination with local and county officials, will bring our support and programs to bear to help those affected by this tragedy,” Region told CNN. of the Greater Pennsylvania American Red Cross. in a statement.
