Newport marked 100 years of carnival history last night (Thursday) with one of the biggest and most spectacular turnouts of floats and spectators for an illuminated event in decades.
The parade, which lasted a full 40 minutes, was led by the agricultural vehicles of the Young Farmers. This was followed by a procession of a diverse selection of classic cars.
Crowds were drawn by a selection of Carnival Royalty from the island’s main towns and former Newport Carnival Queens. Folk musical accompaniment was provided by Medina Marching Band, Vectis Corps of Drums and Isle of Wight Highland Pipes and Drums. A highlight of the parade was the magnificent Mexican Day of the Dead performance by the Wight Strollers.
Refreshments for the hard working committee members and Carnival Queens were provided by Domino’s, one of many businesses supporting Newport Carnival this year.
Chairman of the Carnival Committee, Paddy McHugh said:
“I took over acting chair for June about 18 months ago and said we’re going to make our 100th the biggest. We passed it with flying colors. From July’s main to last night’s lighting, the crowds were insane. I have never seen Newport so busy. What an atmosphere!
“There are so many local businesses that have come on board this year, as it used to be. So many people to thank whom I personally will soon. Again, a massive thanks team and to you the public.”
