In light of massive plans to improve water quality across the coast through the establishment of 13 new water treatment plants and 10 on-line treatment systems, Guyana Water Incorporated will begin a hands-on program.
This was announced by the Chief Executive of GWI, Mr. Shaik Baksh, who was then addressing the graduates of the Company’s Plant Operator Training Program, Level II.
Mr. Baksh explained that on-the-job training for operators will ultimately lead to upward mobility, thus contributing to the development of human resources at all levels within the company.
In turn, the internship program will help share knowledge and fill new positions that will become available.
The CEO also admitted that there is a plea for high iron content without water on the coast. For this, he affirmed that the Government’s investment in the realization of these new water treatment plants will help significantly improve the quality of water that citizens receive.
He told the graduates that their role as Plant Operators is important in ensuring the functionality of the plants and the distribution of clean water to the residents.
He also noted that GWI is conducting a study that involves using surface water and less chemicals to treat it. These sources are East Demerara Conservancy, Boerasirie Conservancy, Five Mile in Bartica and Dakoura Creek in Linden. The company is also seeking twenty-seven resources in Linden to be put to use.
The Executive Director of Human Resource Management and Development of GWI pointed out that 17 people successfully completed the training program, which was held for a period of one year. He added that the training is in line with the expansion and modernization plans for water treatment processes within the company.
He commended the plant operators for their effort and sacrifice and encouraged them to use their new skills and knowledge to enhance their work performance.
Mr. Wendell Jeffery, a Director on the Board of GWI, told the graduates that the training they have received is a result of the foresight of the Board and Management of the company.

He emphasized that as operators working in the country’s only Water Utility, they have an important role to play towards the development of Guyana’s water sector. He reminded them that citizens across the coast depend on them for a safe, clean and timely supply of water.
He called the training program part of the story in the making as the company moves toward expansion.
Meanwhile, Mr. Avinash Parsram, Head of Water Quality and a facilitator of the program, advised operators to not only understand what they are doing in their job, but also understand why they are doing it and how it will help you. to improve efficiency.
He encouraged them to be responsible and dedicated to their work.
A second group of plant operators is expected to begin training later this month and the program is scheduled to run for a period of six months.
