About 200 families were allocated house plots in Stewartville and Meten-Meer-Zorg, Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) during a meeting at West Demerara High School on Friday.

The meeting, which was geared towards addressing housing issues in the region, was chaired by the Minister of Housing and Water, Mr Collin Croal and a team from the Central Housing and Planning Authority. The president of the region, Mr. Ishan Ayube and the vice president, Mr. Omesh Satyanand.

During the meeting, participants were allowed to withdraw their respective number and make an initial payment.

Minister Croal in his speech admitted that the exercise is not enough to meet the demand for housing in Region Three. However, he noted that in the coming weeks, a massive separation exercise will be held in the region under the Ministry’s ‘Dream Come True’ banner for housing.

Region Three has about 14,000 pending land applications. In an effort to meet this demand, the minister said that new land is being sought and plans are advancing for the construction of around 500 low-income housing units.

Additionally, approximately $3.4 billion is being spent on infrastructure development in five new residential developments in the region, namely: Cornelia Ida, Anna Catherina, Edinburg, Meten-Meer-Zorg and Stewartville. The works include the installation of water supply networks and the construction of access roads, bridges, canals and drainage networks.

Minister Croal also highlighted some upcoming government projects for the region such as Schoonord, West Coast Demerara to Crane, West Coast Demerara, four lane highway, which is being executed under the Ministry of Housing and Water. The proposed freeway is expected to be 2.4 miles (3.9 kilometers). It will reduce traffic congestion along the West Coast and West Coast Demerara corridors, while at the same time modernizing the country’s infrastructure and creating avenues for housing and commercial development.

The region will also benefit from a new Demerara River bridge, as well as improvements in the education and health sectors.
