The second match of the 2022 Women’s Football Carnival of Nations took place at the Darebin International Sports Center on Sunday, with 51 goals scored in 13 matches across the competitive and social divisions.
After 80 goals were scored in the same amount of matches last week, the second day was tight and competitive across the board.
In the social (Wattle) division, the Bahamas team made their long-awaited tournament debut, beating Greece 6-1 to firmly establish themselves as one of the competition’s favourites. The drama continued in the next game as Sweden came from two goals down to grab a 2-2 draw with Austria.
The competitive (Eucalyptus) division kicked off in the afternoon as Tuvalu showed its potential by beating England 2-1 before Mauritius beat Malta 2-0 in front of a huge crowd.
Afghanistan took full advantage of the mercy rule, scoring four goals in the second half to beat Brazil 4-3. Under the tournament’s mercy rule, to prevent a punt, a team trailing by three goals must put two extra players on the field.
Later that day, in another knockout match, Spain and Chile put on a show for their adoring fans. Chile trailed for most of the match but refused to give up, fighting hard to stay in the contest. In the end Spain proved too strong and won 3-2 to secure their place in the quarter-finals against Iceland.
In the rest of the round of 16 Eucalyptus; Australia, Iceland, Turkey, Finland and Germany all booked their place in the quarter-finals
The carnival showcases women’s football and is a perfect opportunity for women of all abilities to play in a competitive yet social environment.
