HUSTON – For the first time in nearly 40 years, the University of Houston men’s basketball program will play as one of the nation’s top teams when it begins the 2022-23 season against Northern Colorado at 7 p.m., on Monday, inside the Fertitta Center.
The Cougars, who are ranked third in both the Associated Press and the USA TODAY Sports The coaches’ polls haven’t ranked this high in the preseason since the 1983-84 Cougar team debuted at No. 3 in the AP poll.
Under the leadership of 2022 CBS Sports National Coach of the Year and three-time American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year Kelvin Sampson, the Cougars have established themselves as one of the nation’s premier programs.
Since 2017-18, Houston has captured five American Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament titles, competed in four NCAA Tournaments and posted a 143-30 record.
Only Gonzaga (155-16) has more wins than the Cougars during that span.
SEASON OPENING STORY
• With its 83-75 overtime victory against Hofstra inside the Fertitta Center on Nov. 9, 2021, Houston improved to 57-20 in all-time home games.
• The Cougars have won 13 and 17 of their last 18 road games last season… Only a 65-63 loss to Georgia Southern on the first day of the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer in Durham, NC, on November 11, 2008, prevents a longer generation.
• Houston has been winning well in recent history, winning 13 games last season by an average of 25.4 points per game (330 points in 13 games).
• Houston has won six of the last seven games by 28+ points.
