32 dead as suspension bridge collapses in Morbi five days after reopening

At least 32 people are suspected to have died after an old suspension bridge on the Machchhu river in Gujarat’s Morbi town collapsed on Sunday evening causing several people standing on it to fall into the river, officials said.

The bridge, which was recently reopened to the public after renovation, collapsed after it could not support the weight of people standing on it, they said.

“Due to the collapse of the bridge, several people fell into the river. A rescue operation is underway. Several people are reported to have sustained injuries. They have been rushed to hospitals,” said local MLA and state minister Brijesh Merja.
