$489M in marijuana, shotguns found at 2 camps along Berbice River

A joint operation by the services on Friday along the Berbice River in Region Six resulted in the discovery of a large quantity of marijuana and two firearms in separate camps.

The narcotics eradication exercise was conducted at the DeVeldt Savannah on the Berbice River, by officers and ranks from the Guyana Police Force Maritime Section and Narcotics Branch, along with ranks from the Guyana Defense Force Coast Guard from 05:00 until 14:00.

During the exercise, a marijuana farm, two camps and two drying areas were found.

The farm was about four acres, with about 20,000 cannabis plants ranging in size from six inches to two feet tall.

A 37-year-old farmer from Stewartville, West Coast Demerara and Wiruni Berbice River, was found on the farm tending to cannabis plants and he was arrested.

When the guards conducted a search at the first camp, they found a suspected 12-meter gun loaded with three live cartridges, a Guyanese passport, an identity card and a birth certificate in favor of the farmer who was arrested.

Searches were also conducted at the second camp, where a suspected 12-gauge pistol was recovered along with four twelve-gauge cartridges.

Officers also searched the two drying areas and found an estimated 800 pounds of dried cannabis. The estimated weight for cannabis plants is 400 pounds. The total street value of the cannabis recovered during the operation is $489 million.

A petrol plow, some agricultural implements and spray cans were also found at the camp. Plants, camps and drying areas, agricultural implements and sprayers were all destroyed by the fire.

The farmer was escorted to the Central Police Station, where he was taken into custody and the suspected firearms and ammunition were located.
