AVON — The 73rd annual Avon Fat Steer Show will be held Wednesday, Aug. 17 through Saturday, Aug. 20 at Avcom Park, S. Harrison Street, Avon.
On Wednesday evenings, people can bring their home and garden exhibit entries to the exhibit building between 4 and 7 p.m. The art and photography division consists of small art (drawing, painting, 3-D art, misc. ) along with adult art (there will be a combined class, any painting, drawing or sculpture). If someone manages to capture a moment with their camera, they can enter the photos in the photo share. Age divisions in the photo show include youth (kindergarten through fifth grade), middle school (sixth through 12th grade), and adult.
Garden show items will also be accepted that night. Divisions include flowers, foliage, flowering branches, arrangements, potted plants, garden crops, garden crops and unusual and miscellaneous. Exhibitors are also invited to display items such as afghans, cross stitch, quilts, other quilted items, rug fixing items, knitted items, needlework, crochet items and sewn items.
Thursday 18th August starts bright and early as barrow weighing will take place from 7am to 8.30am with barrow judging to start at 9.30am.
No one wants to miss the cake auction and prize presentation at 7 p.m. In 2021, 60 contest cakes were sold along with three donated cakes for a total of $22,200!
Friday, August 19, chicken and pig fights will begin at 5:30 p.m. Boys and girls ages 3 to 6 can participate in the chicken fight and 7 to 10 years old can try to catch the pig. Entries must be submitted by Monday, August 15th at Tompkins State Bank (Avon) by 6pm. Friday evening tractors and trucks will be in the tractor pull at 7pm
Saturday, August 20 is full of fun events such as the jumble, antique tractor and engine show, heifer, bucket calf and steer judging, driving auction and fireworks will take place. Last year, 17 steers were shown, bringing in a total of $83,637.50 (average price of $4.56 per pound).
Looking for something tasty while visiting the fair? No one will have to look far! In addition to the regular carnival food and concessions, the Abingdon-Avon FFA will be selling hamburgers, hot dogs, nachos and snacks, and the Avon Lion’s Club will be selling butterfly pork chops and rib-eye sandwiches. The Abingdon-Avon softball team will be selling lemonade and popcorn shake-ups.

The carnival is from Boden Amusements Thursday evening until Saturday evening. Exhibit building hours are Thursday and Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 12 to 9 p.m.
