Interior designer Anna Persia Bastos talks about how furniture, scents, colors and lighting can affect people’s health and quality of life.
The professional chosen for the first edition of the 2022 ArchClub Yearbook explains that healthy homes and spaces contribute to inclusion, health and sustainability
Anna Persia Bastos is a businesswoman and space designer, owner of the Persia Interiores studio, and her greatest pleasure is to design spaces that make a difference for people, as she believes that the environments that surround us influence us all the time.
So why not create spaces that benefit life? This is his goal, to transform people’s lives, bringing health to the residents.
The materials used in construction and renovations, the furniture that make up the decoration and the small daily habits can spoil the quality of life inside the house, making the residents sick. How to have a healthy home?
The concept of the ‘healthy home’
The healthy home concept aims to create environments that generate health for residents. We live 90% of our lives in built spaces and they are significantly more polluted than outdoor environments. In this project concept, we think of space as a generator of health, so what can be done to make it really generate health for the occupants or users of the spaces? Thinking about what kind of furniture to specify, the type of paint, whether the environment is humidified by natural lighting and ventilation, in the long-term protection of spaces… all this makes a difference in people’s lives.
Healthy projects
A healthy project takes into account seven essential points to bring health to the inhabitants and/or users of the spaces. Acoustics, lighting, cleaning materials, building materials, electromagnetic pollution, air and water quality, and exercise and leisure.
During design, it is necessary to reflect on what is specified for the built environment and what are the best strategies to improve what already exists. There is no point in thinking about just one of the points listed here because they all have a significant impact on the environment and a sick home reflects on the residents and causes illness for all who enjoy it. It is a set of strategy projects and solutions that are thought and put into practice, always aiming at the well-being and quality of life of the residents.
Air, water, lighting and ventilation are extremely important to the well-being and health of beings. We cannot live without them and if any of them are of poor quality, we get sick.
The materials we use in construction can generate pollution. The specification of paint that contains pollutants can cause allergies, headaches, lack of breathing walls… all these affect our health. The same goes for the cleaning products we use at home. Everything we put into the environment we live in has an impact on our lives.
In summary, the healthy project focuses on health, well-being, ensuring a better quality of life.
The scents of the environment
Have you ever heard of environmental fragrance? “This term, widely used in commercial environmental projects, applies perfectly to residential environments as well. Environmental aroma can be artificial, when we introduce an aroma into a space, or be part of the space itself, when it belongs to a product”. explains Anna Persia Bastos, interior designer and reference in projects for healthy, sustainable and inclusive spaces.
A coffee table in the afternoon perfumes the whole environment with the aroma of bread and cookies, leaving an unforgettable aroma. When this happens, you register this sensation in your unconscious, and every time you sit at a table that refers to your first experience, the emotion you felt will return to the same vibration as before, connecting to this environment of young. Isn’t that amazing?
In the Lavabo Concept project (photo), the walls were painted with a texture of recycled coffee powder, a scent that warms the hearts of Brazilians and refers to pleasant moments.
and why does this happen?
Smell is called the chemical sense, because it allows human beings to distinguish a useful or not useful substance from the smell sensed by the nose. The smells we smell are processed close to the centers of emotion and memory, showing no cognitive effort to register that smell that reminds us of that space or situation.
The power of scent goes beyond having an aromatic place. It can affect your mood, your connection to the environment, your relationships with people, closing deals and much more. Because it is the first sense to be sharpened, it is through it that the first impression comes.
Here it was already possible to perceive the great ally that commercial enterprises. But what about residential, can they benefit from this strategy?
According to Anna Persia Bastos, “a good fragrance is able to boost self-esteem and even provide health benefits.
Research shows that when scents are inhaled, they help activate the body’s limbic system, which is linked to mood, emotions, memory and even our behavior patterns.”
Why the concern about inclusion and sustainability?
I understand that the inclusion of everyone in any space is vital. We are all different and respecting this diversity is respecting the other in his totality. Spaces must be designed for everyone, so that they welcome and give autonomy to whoever enjoys them.
In terms of sustainability, it also relates to respect for all things. We cannot think that we are not responsible for a better world, a healthier life. I believe we have no choice but to seek a more sustainable world.
Sustainable in the sense of not using, not destroying the natural resources that were given to us and we are exterminating everything, from non-acceptance to slave labor, etc. In all my projects I always look for low impact materials that do not harm the environment, ways to not generate so much waste, to pollute the environment less, to reuse what the client has, renovating and giving it a other value to parts and furniture. . It is a loving look at what we have and the fear of losing this wealth.
