The Soleil Saturday Short Film Series and the Third Horizon Film Festival are partnering to bring you some of the best short films from the Caribbean diaspora
Over the past few months, Soleil Space – a Brooklyn-based media company led by Trinidadian founder and CEO Micha Cooper-Edwards, who last year appeared in ForbesThe Next 1000 List — launched their Saturday Short Film Series.
Showcasing short films from emerging filmmakers across the Asian, African, Caribbean, Latin American and Middle Eastern diasporas, the live screenings feature film pairings with director Q&As. The series has now featured over 30 films from directors in more than two dozen countries.
The initiative came from a Soleil’s glisten podcast, which profiles filmmakers and their journeys. glistenListeners had a popular complaint: they couldn’t see or access the movies featured in the episodes. The Soleil team saw an invaluable opportunity to showcase that work.
Additionally, starting this May and every other month for the rest of the year, Soileil will be partnering with the Third Horizon Film Festival to present a special line of shorts. The award-winning Third Horizon Film Collective makes it their mission to develop, produce, exhibit and screen Caribbean diaspora film, and also hosts the annual Third Horizon Film Festival in Miami (twice named the one of the 25 most beautiful film festivals in the world by MovieMaker Magazine).
“Our relationship with Third Horizon goes back several years,” Cooper-Edwards explained. “Anyone who has experienced their film festival knows the care and authenticity with which they curate films from the region and how they have been a gateway for the Caribbean’s very talented creators to be seen and appreciated across the Caribbean Sea.”
It’s a sentiment echoed by Romola Lucas, Co-Founder and CEO of Third Horizon. “For us, it is important to remain grounded in our Caribbean character and stay true to our roots, so we welcome opportunities to partner with organizations working in the Caribbean space and help build it in ways which we are not”, she says. “It’s wonderful that Soleil is devoting its time and resources to amplifying Caribbean voices for their global audience, and we’re happy to be a part of that effort.”
Short film Soleil on Saturday x Third Horizon Partnership launches Saturday May 7th on Soleil Space’s YouTube channel (youtube.com/soleilspace), with a lineup that includes Trinidadian Maya Cozier’s that heaven and Guyanese-American Mandy Marcus’ cousins. The second installment is given on Saturday 9th July.
