Around the Areni-1 cave cellar
Areni Cave-1 in Vayots Dzor, Armenia is the oldest known wine cellar dating back to 4100 BC. The place is known for wine presses, fermentation vats, jars and glasses. World archaeologists found seeds and vines of V. vinifera inside this ancient cave. The existence of this winery suggests that winemaking at the time was already a well-developed process, and that the technology probably went much further back.
A team of Armenian and Irish archaeologists discovered the Areni-1 winery in 2007 in the Areni-1 cave complex in the village of Areni. Near the village of Areni is a well-preserved over 5500-year-old leather moccasin, where, among other things, a wine press, fermentation and storage vessels and dried grape vines were discovered.
According to renowned archaeologist Gregory Areshian of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), this is the oldest and most reliable evidence of winemaking ever found. He also mentioned that for the first time they have found a complete archaeological picture of the dating of wine production.
The winery discovered on the West Coast in 1963 remains the second oldest winery in the world.
If you like a trip full of strange things or you are a wine lover, this is the right place for you. Time to score!
