TUSCALOOSA, Ala.– The Alabama men’s tennis team finished day one with a doubles victory Friday at the SEC/Big 12 Challenge at Alabama Tennis Stadium.
Also competing this weekend are the UA’s João Ferreira captured a victory at the Country Club of Birmingham Invitational in Birmingham, Ala.

SEC/Grand Challenge 12
double
- No. 33 Filip Planinsek AND German Samofalov defeated Baptiste Anselmo of Oklahoma (OU) and Justin Schlageter in the tournament opener
- The UA duo fought hard to take a 7-6 (8) victory.
Single
- Roan Jones battled back but fell to Conner Thomson of South Carolina 6-2, 6-4
- UA first year students Matias Ponce De Leon held off OU opponent Baptiste Anselmo at 6-6 in the first set before falling in a 7-3 tiebreak
- Ponce De Leon then lost the second set 6-3 to fall in the match
- Filip Planinsek lost in a 6-4 split set to OU’s Justin Schlageter
- The Tide will resume play on Saturday at 1pm CT
CCB invitation
- João Ferreira opened Friday’s play with a win over Olimjon Nabiev of Southern Miss
- The UA sophomore won the first set 6-4, before falling in the second set 6-1 to force a third round
- Ferreira secured victory in the final set 7-6 (4)
- In the second round of the tournament, Ferreira faced Thiago Pernas of East Tennessee State, where he fell 6-1, 6-2.
- Ferreira will play in the consolation round on Saturday at 12pm CT
