Alexandra P. Davis Commissioner Putting You First… Keeps Us First

Hello friends and neighbors, I am grateful to be able to contact you once again through this medium. Thank you for your continued support.

June was recognized as Caribbean American Heritage Month and I was pleased to kick it off with a media presentation showcasing our Caribbean Heritage activities for the month with music and entertainment. We ended the month with some Taste of the Caribbean Islands at Vizcaya Park. A fun time was had by all as we incorporated new aspects this year with an art and book fair as well as cooking demonstrations.

I am pleased to have worked alongside the City of Miramar’s economic development and revitalization team, the Business Inclusion and Diversity (BID) program, in partnership with the Miramar-Pembroke Pines Chamber of Commerce to host the Biz Fit Roadshow and Virtual Workshop 2022. The Biz Fit Workshop is designed to help small businesses start, operate and expand in Miramar. The Biz Fit Roadshow and workshop offered businesses free information, resources and incentives available to area businesses.

On July 17, in collaboration with the Anzora Foundation, I hosted Sunday Gospel Groove with Stellar Award-nominated singers Williams from Indianapolis, Indiana, comedian Natasha Calloway, Psalmist Ernest Gonder and other local artists at the Miramar Cultural Center. This event was created to raise awareness and money for mental health. Attendees enjoyed a spectacular show full of spirit all the while supporting this worthy cause and patronizing our vendors and food trucks.

We kicked off the month of August with community and public safety by recognizing National Night on August 2nd in the city of Miramar. It was truly a great evening for our public safety officers to mix and mingle with members of our community from the western suburbs to our historic eastern neighborhoods.

Jamaica’s 60th Independence weekend was one to cherish. I had a blast showing Jamaican pride with the colors of the flag throughout our city from the east/historic Water Tower to the central palm trees of City Hall and finally our west Marquee sign and monument! Jamaican cultural heritage was on full display as we danced the night away in black, green and gold celebrating 60 glorious years of Independence at our 60th Jamaica Independence Day celebration held on August 5th. It was a pleasure to have Stone Love perform and commemorate their 50th anniversary. During our Fun and Laughter vacation, four lucky winners received round-trip Spirit vouchers to any destination of their choice! In partnership with Grace Foods, we also gave away Grace Food baskets to the ten golden winners of our trivia. Attendees dined and dined with our fantastic vendors providing food, parties and entertainment. It was important to me to teach my son about his heritage and so it was great to see so many parents with their children teaching them about Jamaican culture right here in Miramar!

On 9 August, I had the pleasure of visiting the home of former UK Consul General Nicolette Brent, who moved on from her post to a new one, as we welcomed Consul General Rufus Drabble. We look forward to having the Consul General present during the Black British Heritage Celebration on 29 October and future collaborations.

It’s always a proud moment in the City of Miramar when we can join our business owners in officially opening their facilities! Congratulations to Valeria for opening two businesses in the central area of the city; Smoothie Babe & Mortgage Raise!

On Thursday, August 10, I took the time to celebrate Ecuadorian Independence Day at the Miramar Cultural Center Theater with the Consul General of Ecuador and its citizens. I had a wonderful time! I am fascinated by classic cultural ballads. Viva Ecuador!

During the second week of August, I had the pleasure of attending the Florida League of Cities Conference in the city of Hollywood as the league celebrated its 100th anniversary. It was great to gather with colleagues from across the state to share best practices and collectively move our cities forward!

The Soggy Doggy event on August 14th at our water park was such a treat for our dogs and their owners. Our parks department staff went out of their way to make sure the little dogs and big dogs who had different times were entertained with music, an ice cream truck (humans only) and photo ops!

Summer vacation officially ended on August 16th as we opened the school doors for another school year. Thank you to Broward County Schools Superintendent Vickie L. Cartwright for inviting me to welcome our Miramar students to the classroom and celebrate the first day of school. I was happy to support the teachers, administrators and staff with the car pool at AC Perry Elementary School and New Renaissance Middle School. I pray that this school year will be epic!

I started the day on a high note with the graduation of our newest firefighters in town on August 18th. I have to say that the newest recruits were a very diverse group of men and women and I wish them well in their new careers.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Independence Day was celebrated on August 31. I enjoyed celebrating Trinidad & Tobago’s 60th Independence Day on the front lawns of City Hall. We had great food, great music and great company.

Having been born and raised over the years in England, I must say that the Queen was a stable figure in the country, regardless of the political party in power; she was always constant, humbly leading from behind the scenes most of the time. She will be missed. We will be celebrating the contributions of black Britons in October as the city continues to recognize our cultural diversity.

On September 11, we remembered and reflected on the victims, survivors and loved ones of the 9|11 tragedy. Let us be kind to one another remembering that we are our brother’s keeper.

September 14th was another great day in the neighborhood as we worked together with the Red Cross, Miramar Fire-Scue, citizens and corporate volunteers to install life-saving smoke detectors in homes! We were able to install alarms in 70 homes!

On September 15th I along with the executive staff had the opportunity to visit the CBS4 news station in Doral. It was truly a pleasure as we tried to ensure that the good news of Miramar was told. A special thanks to General Manager Darryl Green and his team for hosting us!
