Alton Canine Carnival set Sept. 24

ALTON – A dog carnival is planned at the Alton Farmers and Artisans Market on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 8 a.m. to noon.

The event will include a pet parade at 10 a.m. and a costume contest at 10:30 a.m. The winner of the costume contest will receive a $20 gift certificate to Petco. Rescue agencies will also hold an adopt-a-thon during the event.

There will be face painting, balloon animals and activities for pets and families. Vendors will sell pet-related products such as handmade dog treats, toys, bandanas, clothing, collars, ties and pet portraits. Information will be available for services, such as pet sitting.

In partnership with the Madison County Humane Society and Madison County Triad, the event will also include a vaccine and microchip clinic with free vaccines while supplies last. Rabies vaccinations, dog DAPPv and cat HCP will be free, Bordatellla will cost $10. Microchips will cost $20.

The Madison County rabies registration fee is $15 for spayed/neutered pets or $35 for non-spayed/neutered pets. The event is cash or check only, walk-ins only.

Information will also be available at the three-acre Alton Dog Park in Russell Commons Park. Annual dues are $25 for Alton residents or $35 for non-residents.

Water and shade fountains and plenty of grass will also be available to keep pets comfortable. The event is open to leashed pets who behave well in crowds.

The market is in the parking lot on the corner of Landmarks Boulevard and Henry Street and runs every Saturday until October 15th.
