BIRMINGHAM, Ala. High middle blocker at Alabama Alyah Wells was named the Southeastern Conference Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after helping lead the Crimson Tide to its first conference win of the season last week.
Wells led the team with 14 kills in a three-set sweep of Missouri last Wednesday, the first SEC win of the season for Alabama and the first-year coach Missing Reed. She committed just two errors in 24 swings, good for a .500 hitting percentage, and added four defensive blocks. The 14 kills are tied for her highest total in SEC play this season and marks the ninth time in the last 10 games she has finished in double figures.
The weekly award is the first of Wells’ career and the first for any Alabama player since March 1, 2020 when Abby Marjama and Madelyn St. Germain took home that week’s offensive and defensive honors, respectively. The Tide has won 21 Offensive Player of the Week awards since the category was introduced in 2004.
Wells and the Crimson Tide will be back in action on Wednesday, October 19 at 8:00 PM CT in Foster Auditorium, with the game televised live on ESPNU.
