Premier Philip J. Pierre, noting the weekend killings, spoke Monday of the need for police to review their tactics.
“There were two murders over the weekend and I have to say that the police will have to review their tactics. What they are doing is obviously not working,” Pierre, in charge of National Security, told reporters.
The Castries East MP’s remarks came on the sidelines of a cabinet meeting and in response to questions from reporters about the crime.
He said the situation was serious.

“I think the police will now have to go back to the drawing board and rethink their tactics and look at ways and means by which they can stop that disaster,” Pierre said.
Asked about his recommendations, the prime minister’s response was that he is not a policeman.
“My father was – not me,” he explained.
Pierre said he could not advise on police operational matters.
“And that’s the problem. Many people in this country think about the things they say just by reading Facebook. I’m not a police officer. I don’t know about the operational aspects of the police force,” Pierre told reporters.

And he asserted that his duty as Minister of National Security is to make resources and vehicles available to the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force.
Furthermore, Pierre stated that as Homeland Security Minister, his duty was to refinance the training vote that the previous United Workers’ Party (UWP) administration had shut down.
“My job as Minister of Homeland Security is to repair the Gros Islet police station that the United Workers Party has refused to repair since 2016,” he noted.
“I cannot give an opinion on operational matters in the police force and I will not,” Pierre emphasized.
