WINSTED — The annual Fireman’s Carnival kicked off Wednesday night at Rowley Field, drawing a crowd of teenagers and families for a night of rides, games and fun.
The carnival, one of the Winsted Fire Department’s major fundraisers of the year, is also a gift to the town. “We set this up for families,” said senior member Richard Mazzei, who joined member Mike Buttrick at the department booth serving fried dough, hamburgers, hot dogs, fries and onion rings. “It’s a chance for them to enjoy a night out with us.”
Fire Chief Jamie Lagasse said the department has between 50 and 75 members working the carnival.
“It’s a good start tonight, a lot of people,” he said. “Wednesday and Thursday are wristband nights, and then the fireworks are on Friday. Saturday is the fire parade and we have between 25 and 30 departments and companies registered for that. It’s going to be a good weekend. Hopefully the weather will cooperate.”
Carnival hours are 6-10pm Thursday and 6-11pm Friday and Saturday.
The carnival’s Beer Garden, open to those 21 and older, will feature live entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights, and raffle tickets with a variety of seven prizes will be available for purchase on the carnival grounds .
Fireworks will be held at 9.30pm on Friday, with rain on Saturday night.
The firemen’s parade starts at 18:00 on Saturday, with a new route. Rowley Street is under construction, so this year the parade will start on Lake Street, follow Main Street past the reviewing stand, turn right on Case Avenue, left on Willow Street and end at the carnival grounds .
