Why do ships have special hulls?

Having unique hull colors or designs can help cruise ships be identifiable from a distance and serve as distinctive branding for a cruise line.

Carnival Cruise Line has used the easily recognizable split “whale tale” fuselage as its signature look since that unique piece was first installed on the former carnival ship Tropical in 1982. Tropical was the first cruise ship ever built for Carnival Cruise Line, and every ship since has the same Joe Farcus hull design.

Now the new color for Carnival Cruise Line adds even more distinction to each ship, from the trio of colors to the graceful flight that gives the ship the illusion of speed and movement.

Many cruise lines rely on hull coloring as part of their identity. Norwegian Cruise Line’s ships feature some of the most elaborate hull designs of any cruise ship, with their custom and themed works by names such as Peter Max, David “Lebo” Le Batard, Guy Harvey and Robert Wyland.

Other cruise lines have more coordinated designs, such as the British flag motif of the British cruise line P&O Cruises, the classic dark nautical hulls of the Cunard Line, the personalized “mermaids” of Virgin Voyagesor Princess Cruises’ iconic Princess Seawitch.
