News Americas, New York, NY, Mon. November 11, 2024: The suspect in the murder of the former MP of Antigua and Barbuda, Asot Michael will appear in court today for the first time.
Michael, 54, a prominent public figure, was found dead at his home last Tuesday, reportedly from stab wounds. Media reports suggest that Alexta Francis, 27, a landscaper, confessed and gave police evidence to support his account. Prime Minister Browne expressed confidence in the thoroughness of the investigation and noted the importance of speedy justice in such high-profile cases, given the potential impact on the country’s reputation.
A police statement confirmed FranĨesku’s arrest and thanked the public for their cooperation. The Police Commissioner also appreciated the professionalism and commitment of his team for solving the case. So far, the motive of the murder has not been revealed.
Browne praised local police for their swift action in apprehending Francis, who was arrested late Friday and charged with Michael’s murder.
On his weekly Pointe FM radio show, Browne praised the quick response of law enforcement, saying, “Law enforcement is to be commended for this quick capture and we appreciate the public’s assistance in providing the intelligence that led to this arrest.”
Antigua’s cabinet said Michael will be given an official funeral.
