Autumn Americanist Conference in Malaga | Atalayar

Friday, October 28, 2022, The Economic Society of Friends of the Country of Malaga, as part of its Casa América project, the International Commission of Hispanics and the Cultural Association Héroes de Cavite, are sponsoring a series of conferences with an Americanist content under the title “The Past and Present of Hispanic Globalization,” coordinated by Jorge Chauca García.

The conference will be held from 18:00-21:00 in the Assembly Hall of the Economic Society, under the watchful eye of the illustrious monarch Charles III and with the permission of his minister of India, Jose de Galvez from Malaga, in the next room.

José María Ruiz Povedano, president of the Economic Association of Friends of the Country, will open the event. After the obligatory introduction and acknowledgments, the following speakers will take the floor: Jorge Chauca García ( Past Actuality: Bicentennial Critical America at the Crossroads ), professor at the Faculty of Education Sciences of the University of Málaga, with a bicentennial reflection exercise on both sides of the Atlantic world; then, David Cuevas Góngora (Malagueños in the Pacific: from Magellan to the discovery of the Solomon Islands), lecturer in the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts at UMA, who will talk about the so-called Spanish lake and the presence of Malaga in a space so colossal; after a suitable break, Fernando Mogaburo López (Tercios de Málaga y tercios de Ultramar), military researcher and reserve cavalry lieutenant, will talk about the study of the legendary tercios in our city and in Spanish America; finally, and before the closing session, Juan Carlos Sánchez Mateos (Hispanic-American Tears and Praise for Viceroy Bernardo de Gálvez), historian and member of the Bernardo de Gálvez y Gallardo Cultural Association, will present a lesser-known episode of Macharatungo, the famous Bernardo de Gálvez, a liaison figure between Spain and America.

The four historians, associated with the University of Malaga and the cultural world of the city of Malaga, aim to strengthen the social function of history by creating institutional links open to society as a fundamental value of research and dissemination. As well as strengthening ties between Spain and Latin America through the Casa América Project in Malaga. All Malagueños, Latin Americans and visitors are expected to participate in this day of brotherhood in such an emblematic place in the historic center as the headquarters of the Economic Association of Friends of the Country.
