Braata Productions, an organization dedicated to highlighting Caribbean and Caribbean-American artists and culture, will present the Bankra Festival of Caribbean Culture, celebrating the 60th anniversary of independence for Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago.
This festival will take place on Saturday, August 6th from 8:00 pm on the lawn of the York Center for the Performing Arts at 94-45 Guy R. Brewer Blvd. in Jamaica.
The word “bankra” refers to a large, woven basket made of materials from the Caribbean islands, and is usually carried or used to display colorful produce. These intertwined materials relate to the fusion of Caribbean cultures that takes place at this festival.
The Bankra Caribbean Culture Festival has attractions for everyone to enjoy, with stalls, island baskets, cultural performances and a pop-up cultural show. There will be traditional folk music and dance from Braata folk singers, JC Lodge (Jamaica), Marva Newton (Trinidad & Tobago) and Carnyval dancers (Trinidad & Tobago).
There is also a food pavilion with authentic cuisine from different islands. In addition, there will be activities such as drum circles and a game area where participants can play traditional Caribbean games.
The event is free, but donations are accepted at braataproductions.org/bankra2022. RSVP for the event at betterunite.com.
