São Paulo, Brazil – President Joe Biden arrived in Brazil on Sunday afternoon, marking the first visit by a US head of state since President Barack Obama’s trip in March 2011. Biden landed in Manaus, where he visited the Amazon Museum and conducted an aerial survey of tropical forests.
In a statement, President Biden unveiled a package of initiatives aimed at strengthening Amazon protection, including a $50 million investment in the Amazon Fund to support conservation, monitoring and deforestation efforts. This new commitment brings total US contributions to $100 million dedicated to preserving the vital ecosystem.
Biden spent about four hours in the region. In the late afternoon, he traveled to Rio de Janeiro, where he will attend the G20 summit that begins on Monday, joining leaders from the world’s biggest economies.
