President Biden has tested positive for COVID-19 again, says his doctor, Kevin O’Connor.
“After testing negative on Tuesday night, Wednesday morning, Thursday morning and Friday morning, the President tested positive late Saturday morning, via antigen testing,” the doctor said in a letter released by the House. White.
O’Connor said Biden is experiencing no symptoms and is doing well. The doctor said there is no reason to restart Paxlovid treatment at this time, but the president will “resume strict isolation procedures.”
Biden tweeted: “People, I tested positive for COVID again today. This happens to a small minority of people. I have no symptoms, but I will be isolating for the safety of everyone around me. I’m still at work and soon I’ll be back on the road.”
Biden, 79, is fully vaccinated and has had two booster shots. He tested positive for the first time on July 21.
He was treated with a five-day course of Paxlovid, an antiviral pill that has been found to be highly effective in reducing the risks of hospitalization and death for COVID-19 patients with mild or moderate symptoms. But some people taking Paxlovid experience a “relapse,” where a person may test positive again between two and eight days after symptoms have subsided and the test is negative.
“The limited information currently available from case reports suggests that people treated with Paxlovid who experience relapse of COVID-19 have had mild illness; there are no reports of severe illness,” the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said of the phenomenon. .
