Several DeKalb County restaurants are participating in Black Restaurant Week Atlanta that runs August 5-14.
Black Restaurant Week celebrates “the flavors of African American, African and Caribbean cuisines with a variety of regional cultural events, celebrates seven years of service and has supported more than 2,000 restaurants since 2016,” according to a press release.
Approximately 50+ metro Atlanta locations have joined the campaign, which was founded by friends Warren Luckett, Falayn Ferrell and Derek Robinson in Houston in 2016. It started as a one-city food experience and is now held in cities across the country . It has expanded from exclusively restaurants and now includes food trucks, bakeries and several metro Atlanta businesses that describe themselves as having “virtual” operations.
“Most businesses don’t have the marketing/PR/advertising dollars to promote their business; Thus, BRW was developed to shine a light on minority businesses – helping them build community awareness to increase their bottom line,” the release said.
“More than just one week speaks to our commitment to supporting the black culinary community year-round,” says Ferrell, Black Restaurant Week LLC’s managing partner of operations.
“More than 90,000 restaurants and bars closed nationwide as of 2020; it is essential that we create a platform that drives awareness of black-owned culinary businesses outside of our culinary tour.”
Among BRW’s missions is to educate consumers on the abundance of cultural cuisines. The organization supports restaurants, bartenders, chefs, caterers and food trucks.
It now takes place in cities such as Baltimore/Washington, DC, and Los Angeles, as well as regional areas such as the Southwest, Midwest, Carolinas, and Northwest.
Gulf Coast Black Restaurant Week is scheduled for October 8-17 and includes restaurants in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Shreveport and other Gulf Coast cities. A Florida BRW is set for November 12-21 and includes cities such as Tampa, North Miami, Sunrise and Orange Park. The BRW website highlights the specialties and promotions of participating restaurants.
