Blackwood, Cariah and Odean named in WI ODI squad, as Hetmyer, Paul and Motie ruled out

Jamaican top-order batsman Jermaine Blackwood as well as Trinidad and Tobago all-rounder Yannic Cariah have both been named in the West Indies squad for CG United’s three-match One Day International (ODI) Series against New Zealand. which starts tomorrow at Kensington Oval.

The pair were included after batsman Shimron Hetmyer withdrew for “personal reasons” while all-rounder Keemo Paul and Gudakesh Motie were ruled out due to injury.

Blackwood, the Test vice-captain, has not played an ODI since 2015, while Cariah has never represented the West Indies but caught the eye of the selection panel while on duty for the WI A team against Bangladesh.

Cariah also captained the West Indies developing players when they won the CG United Super50 Cup (then Colonial Insurance Super50 Cup) title in 2019.

Bowling all-rounder Odean Smith was also added as a reserve.

“Hetmyer has to attend to a family matter in Guyana,” Cricket West Indies (CWI) men’s chief selector Desmond Haynes said. “Unfortunately, Motie is not yet able to rejoin the squad and Keemo is struggling with an injury. However, it provides an opportunity for Yannic Cariah to get a chance.

“He is someone who has performed well on the regional circuit and we feel now is the right time to integrate him into the senior team fold.

“Odean Smith has been added [as a reserve] on the back of some standout performances in the T20I Series. He has shown the all-round ability to change games and we look forward to his continued development.”

West Indies ODI Team: Nicholas Pooran (captain), Shai Hope (vice-captain), Jermaine Blackwood, Shamarh Brooks, Yannic Cariah, Keacy Carty, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Brandon King, Kyle Mayers, Jayden Seales, Kevin Sinclair.

Travel reserve: Odean Smith.
