The launch of Downtown Carnival 2023 is happening today in the heart of the capital.
The Red City themed event, which is a collaborative effort of the Downtown Carnival Committee, Port of Spain City Corporation and Digicel, will conclude with a procession starting at 2pm from Memorial Park and will continue along Frederick Street.
This will be followed by an official launch ceremony in Woodford Square, which is scheduled to start at 4pm.
Three recipients will receive the City Center Carnival Committee’s Heritage Award during today’s launch ceremony.
The winners are International Soca Artiste and Singer-songwriter, Fay-Ann Lyons-Alvarez; Media Personality and Megahost Jemma Jordan, who is fondly referred to as “The Voice of Carnival” and Soca Icon Dexter “Blaxx” Stewart, who will be honored posthumously.
According to a statement from the Port of Spain City Corporation: “These corporations have made a strong contribution to the establishment of Carnival throughout their careers. Their work has raised the standard of the national cultural product through their invaluable work, immeasurable talent and ambassadorship relentless cultural. in representing Trinidad and Tobago on the local, regional and international stage.”
Among those expected to attend are His Worship the Mayor of Port of Spain, Alderman Joel Martinez and the Port of Spain City Council; Councilor Clint Baptiste in his capacity as Chairman of the Downtown Carnival Committee, members of the business community and other specially invited guests.
Members of the public are invited to attend the launch event, which will feature performances from Mical Teja, Ding Dong, Teddyson John, Nessa Preppy, Wadicka and many more.

Together with public and private stakeholders, this launch aims to bring in recognition of the Committee’s important role in the Trinidad and Tobago carnival circuit as we celebrate our global impact.”
