Bolsonaro’s decision prevents Maduro from attending Lula da Silva’s inauguration

Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro will not attend the inauguration of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). The ceremony will be held on January 1, 2023.

The aim of the Workers’ Party was to ensure that the heads of state of South America were at the inauguration as a symbol of the return of the left in the region.

The obstacle to Maduro’s arrival is a decision made by President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), which prevented Chavista and his aides from setting foot on Brazilian territory.

For the Venezuelan dictator to be in Brasilia on January 1, a new decision would have to be issued by the Planalto Palace on the same day. This makes the operation practically impossible.

About 30 presidents and heads of government have already confirmed their presence at the ceremony. From Europe, the king of Spain, Felipe VI, and the presidents of Portugal and Germany, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Frank-Walter Steinmeier, are confirmed.

The United States has designated Deb Haaland, Secretary of the United States Department of the Interior, as the head of the mission.

The US delegation includes Chargé d’Affaires of the US Embassy in Brasilia, Douglas Koneff, and Special Assistant to President Joe Biden, Juan Gonzalez.

According to the transition team, the new names should be confirmed at the inauguration of Lula da Silva.

The foreign presence also includes African, Asian and Middle Eastern politicians.
