COLUMBUS, Ohio – Incoming Ohio State freshmen Nick Feldman and Nic Bouzakis will both battle for a chance at a bronze medal Wednesday at the 2022 World Junior Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Wrestling at 125 kg in the international competition, Feldman defeated 2022 European U20 silver medalist Georgi Ivanov of Bulgaria 5-1 in the quarter-finals.
In the semifinals, Feldman fell 11-1 to 2021 U17 World Champion Amirreza Masoumi Valadi of Iran.
Bouzakis, struggling in the 61 kg bracket, advanced to the quarterfinals after a pair of pins.
Bouzakis won by fall in 1:26 of his first-round bout with Arslan Rakhimov of Uzbekistan and then pinned Abdullah Toprak of Turkey to advance to the quarters. There, Bouzakis lost a second-fourth battle to Iran’s Armin Habibzadehsaroukolaei, 13-11.
After waiting for the result of the semi-final matches, Bouzakis learned that he will fight for a chance at the bronze medal on Wednesday against Mykyta Abramov of Ukraine in the 61 kg repechage.
With Habibzadehsaroukolaei winning in the semi-finals, Bouzakis was drawn back into the 61kg group.
Feldman will face Georgia’s Merab Suleimanashvili in a bronze medal match.
Buckeye assistant coaches Logan Stieber and J Jaggers are also on hand to help coach Team USA and act as personal trainers for Bouzakis and Feldman.
