MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Fifth-year senior right-handed pitcher Trey Braithwaite of the West Virginia University baseball team was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 16th round of the MLB Draft on Tuesday.
The Winchester, Virginia, native was the 483rd overall pick and became the third Mountaineer drafted this season, as well as 105th all-time. In all, WVU has had multiple players selected in nine of the last 10 MLB drafts.
Also Tuesday, freshman right-hander Gavin Van Kempen was drafted by St. Louis. Louis Cardinals in the 20th round. The Castleton, New York, native was the 607th overall selection.
Braithwaite went 3-0 with a 1.70 ERA for the Mountaineers last spring. He struck out 36 in 37.0 innings and finished with eight saves. Overall, opponents hit just .151 against righties.
A transfer from Navy, Braithwaite was named to the All-Big 12 First Team and earned NCBWA All-America Third Team honors. Additionally, he was named to the organization’s Midseason Watch List of the Year.
With the selection, Braithwaite became the first WVU player drafted by the Reds since John Hale in 1971.
