Brazilian Parliament approves general budget for 2023, first year of Lula da Silva’s term in office

The Brazilian parliament yesterday approved the general budget for 2023, the first year of President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s new term, with a significant increase in public spending.

Federal deputies and senators approved on Thursday in a joint session the budget for 2023, which foresees state spending of 5.340 trillion dollars ($1.1 trillion), of which 40 percent will go to public debt commitments and maturities.

The Brazilian budget for 2023 also provides for a monthly payment of R$600 (about US$110) for the Bolsa Familia program, which provides social assistance to the poorest. . .
