Vice President Hamilton Mourão (Republicans), now senator-elect for Rio Grande do Sul, denied the possibility of handing over the presidential belt to newly elected president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT, left) if current chief executive Jair Bolsonaro (PL, right) refuses to respect the rite of transition.
“Religion passes from the outgoing president to the next president[…] I’m not the president. I cannot wear that belt; remove it and hand it over,” said Mourão in an interview with the newspaper Valor Econômico published this Wednesday (November 16).
