Brazil’s electoral court TSE lists words to be banned from the vocabulary for alleged racism

On 30 November, during the meeting Democracy and Anti-Racist Awareness in Electoral Justice, the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) published the brochure “Racist expressions: why to avoid them”.

According to the body, the purpose of the manual is to list words and expressions that will be banned from the Brazilian dictionary on the grounds that the terms would be offensive to blacks.

Words such as “light up”, “slave”, “half-ass” and “nega maluca”, as well as expressions such as “do on the thigh”, were noted as excluded.
