Brazil’s Mines and Energy Ministry announces 38.9% reduction in Itaipu’s tariff for 2023

The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) announced this Monday (December 19) the 38.9% reduction in the Itaipu tariff for 2023.

The new tariff reflects a reduction in the state hydroelectric dam’s debt service and unit cost of electricity services (Cuse).

In 2019, Itaipu’s debt was $2.07 billion and will drop to $277.3 million in 2023.

Thus, the tariff, which in 2019 was $22.60/kW, will go to $12.67, representing a reduction of more than $9 billion in the bill paid by . . .
