In a major restructuring move, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has assigned Brendon McCullum as the new head coach of the England men’s white-ball team, in addition to his current role as head coach of the Test team. The 43-year-old New Zealander has also extended his contract until the end of 2027, cementing his commitment to English cricket.
Unified coaching structure for England
McCullum, who has been in charge of England’s Test team since May 2022, will officially take over the white-ball squad from January 2025, in time for the tour of India and ICC Champions Trophy. He expressed his enthusiasm for the new challenge.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Test team and am excited to expand my role to include the white-ball teams.” the former NZ skipper said in his official statement.
“This new challenge is something I’m ready to embrace and I’m keen to work closely with Jos and the team to build on the strong foundations that are already in place.” he added.
The decision to unify the coaching set-up under McCullum was influenced by Rob Keythe managing director of men’s cricket in England.

The restructuring comes at a time when the busy schedule has brought challenges for the white-ball team. However, with the ease of schedule starting from January 2025, McCullum will be able to devote the necessary focus to the two roles.
The ECB is confident that this restructuring will bring out the best in England’s players and coaching staff as they face the challenges ahead. McCullum’s appointment comes next Matthew MottHis sacking as coach after disappointing World Cup campaigns.
As McCullum prepares to take on his expanded role, he remains grateful for the support from the ECB and his family. With his proven track record and the backing of the ECB, McCullum is poised to lead England’s white-ball team to new heights, building on the strong foundations already in place.
