RIVERWOODS – All ages are invited to the Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods from 10am to 2pm on September 17 for a festive celebration of nature, art and culture.

This is Brushwood Center’s first family festival since 2019 due to the pandemic. The program is a collaboration with community partners from across Lake County.
Highlights of this year’s festival include:
¡Celebrate! Outdoor performance by Black Moon Trio: Specially curated for the Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods’ 2022 Family Festival and Hispanic Heritage Month, Black Moon Trio performs a program celebrating the art and culture of Mexico, Central America, and South America. ¡Celebrate! features the music of Latin composers and includes the world premiere of “Barroqueada: by three-time Grammy-nominated composer Miguel del Aguila. The program, which is presented in Spanish and English, includes a reimagining of Baroque musical forms, music inspired by artists of 20th century visual highlight with Latin flavor and lively rhythms of traditional Latin song and dance.
Discount arts and crafts supplies: During Family Fest, attendees will have a once-a-year opportunity to shop and explore all things BASE. The sale will include fabric and sewing notions, paints of all kinds, brushes and canvases, colored pencils, pads and drawing supplies, jewelry making supplies, thousands of rubber stamps, scrapbooking supplies, baby supplies, art books, clay , threads, tiles and more. Almost everything on BASE is pay-what-you-want and free for teachers and organizations.
Free Little Library Tape Cutter: The Brushwood Center and Vernon Area Public Library are proud to announce the return of the Little Free Library, which is being reinstalled in its new location outside the southeast corner of the Brushwood Center. The new LFL will be unveiled at the festival.
Family friendly jobs: Vernon Area Library will host an interactive booth featuring crafts from three Latin American countries. In addition to its participation in the event, the Vernon Area Library is hosting a variety of fun and engaging programs for families throughout Hispanic Heritage Month.
Multicultural cuisine: Menu ideas reflect a sampling of authentic and fusion world cuisine from American to Asian, Southern barbecue to Mexican to Indian and beyond.
Family Fest is part of the Brushwood Center’s 39th annual Smith Nature Symposium Series: Inspiring Change. This year, the Symposium raises the voices of young people, artists and scientists who are challenging the status quo and pushing for change where it matters most.
