Residents from Carrsville and beyond got to know their neighbors better Saturday, Aug. 6, as they attended the inaugural Old Fashioned Community Carnival at the Walters Ruritan Community House.
Most of the action was outdoors as kids explored bounce houses, participated in classic carnival games, got their faces painted, got a free bite to eat and were able to meet K-9 Cody and officers area law enforcement.
Vendors were on hand inside the community house.
The carnival was organized by the Walters Ladies Community Club.
“I thought it went really well,” club president Shawn Carr said. “I think we had about 200 people come.”
The event ran from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Carr said attendee traffic was steady throughout.
“A lot of them were from Carrsville, some from Windsor and a couple from Franklin,” she said. “I think we had a really good group of people.”
She said the attendees also gave the organizers some suggestions for things to repeat next year.
Asked which features of the carnival seemed most popular to him, Carr said, “The Hit the Cans game, with the bean bags and the big coffee cans, and the bounce houses and maybe the potato sack race and the eggs.
Giving kids the chance to explore the inside of emergency vehicles and even don some gear was the Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office, joined by the Carrsville Volunteer Fire Department, with one of its fire trucks, and the Police of the State of Virginia.
American K-9 Interdiction, which is based in Carrsville, was founded in 2001 with a focus on producing dogs professionally trained to protect and save lives, as noted on AK9I.edu. Helping to represent AK9I at the carnival was K-9 Cody.
“That dog was amazing,” Carr said.
The Walters Ruritan Club lent a hand in the event, coordinating the parking area located just down the street from the community house.
