THE LONG SAULT — After hosting over 30 well-attended events from July 1 onwards, members of South Stormont’s summer student staff were sad to see Carnival Day bring the season’s special events to a close, but happy to see attendees enjoying themselves Tuesday.

Students Addison Girard and Annabelle McIntosh said they will ‘absolutely’ apply for the same positions next summer, hoping to return and help facilitate the fun for the third year in a row.
Given the impending rain, the Carnival Day festivities were moved to the Long Sault Arena and the clouds gave way to rain as the event got underway from 1 p.m.
“They are having fun. It’s actually better that there’s a smaller crowd because they enjoy the stuff (we have here) more,” Girard said.
“There are shorter lines for things like balloon animals and exploding (play structures),” added McIntosh.
Whether it was the weather or the fact that school started on Tuesday for locals who attend French-language schools, attendance on Carnival Day was small. But it was not a reflection of the events held over the past two months, with over 50 young people taking part in some. A variety of event options were available for children to participate in, some for a small fee, ranging from art, science, sports, a tea party, picnic, reptile show, rescue room – and the list goes on.

On Tuesday, Ian Quick of Birthday Party Magic lived up to his name, whipping up all sorts of impressive balloon animals for kids in minutes. Kids can also try a ring toss, bag toss, eat carnival food, play basketball and more.
South Stormont Parks and Recreation Coordinator Cara Lemkay said the success of the summer events would not be possible without the dedication and effort of the summer students and was very grateful for the large turnout this year.
