Cruise operator Carnival Corporation is to install air lubrication systems in most of its fleet, the company said.
Air lubrication directs air flows along the hull of a ship to reduce drag. The company expects the drag to drop 5% per vessel once the equipment is operational.
The company said it is deploying the technology (Silverstream ALS System) on five vessels with 10 more installations in the pipeline. Further, the program will be expanded to include more ships and will continue until 2027.
“Expansion plans are based on the success of the four systems currently operating on ships from it AIDA Cruises AND Princess Cruises brands,” Carnival Corp. said.
The company has been working with ALS technology since 2016.
