Now Carnival Cruise Line is cracking down on the long-standing — but often controversial — practice by some passengers known as “chaise hogs.”

According to a story published by Cruise Radio, while Carnival hasn’t necessarily revised the policy, it did make an addition to the frequently asked questions section of its website about saving sunbeds.

“Carnival has a system designed to ensure that all guests have equal access to sunbeds by preventing seating in the outdoor deck areas,” the website states. “Members of the ship’s crew monitor sunroom usage and if they observe a seat that contains a towel or personal items but appears to be unoccupied, a notice is placed on the seat indicating the current time. If the chair remains unoccupied for 40 minutes, the contents are removed and kept for the guest’s safekeeping.”

As mentioned, it is not necessarily a new policy, but rather a reinforcement of existing Carnival guidelines. Or, depending on how you look at it, a new mantra for her staff to enforce the 40-minute rule. It all appears to be part of a larger move by Carnival to curb misbehavior on board.

After a series of crackdowns, the cruise line earlier this month imposed a fine on unruly passengers. In September, Carnival added a curfew for underage passengers unless accompanied by an adult.
