A terrifying scene at a traveling carnival in India was caught on video on September 4.
In the clip verified by NBC News, a “drop tower” — the classic carnival ride that spins passengers as they move up and down a pole — malfunctions and crashes to the ground. Many of the passenger seats seem to bounce from the force of the impact as soon as they hit the ground. The fall was about 50 meters.
The carnival was in Mohali, Punjab, India, at the time of the incident. Mohali Deputy Superintendent of Police Harsimran Singh Bal confirmed to NBC News that the incident took place on Sunday. He added that around 16 people were injured.
The traveling carnival has since been shut down and officials are investigating whether the operators had all the required permits and safety inspections.
