ALEXANDER — At Alexander High School, the first day of school is all about having fun and catching up with old friends.
As an extra treat, the school organizes a carnival for middle and high school students.
The carnival started in 2017 and is usually held outside on the front lawn. But with this year’s dreary weather, the school had to do some last-minute planning to bring them all inside.
High school principal Shannon Whitcombe said they were able to hold the event during the COVID-19 pandemic because it was outdoors.
“We usually have beautiful weather,” she said. “Unfortunately that’s not the case this year.”
The school had to move many of the outdoor activities — such as an obstacle course and corn hole tournament — indoors, and teachers created various indoor stations. The kids who were interested in band and go to the band and choir room and have a jam session. One of the high school teachers created board games for the children to play. There were also film opportunities.
Whitcombe said the students are given a lot of freedom and are very well behaved.
“None of them are really structured. A lot of it is what the kids want to do with it,” she said. They can get to know their teachers or classmates, or reconnect with people they haven’t seen since last year.
Matthew Wirth and Dom Kwiatek, both juniors, were playing with pins, said it was nice to be back and see all their friends without doing work on the first day of school.
Kendyll Kohlhagen, a junior, said she enjoys seeing old friends again, and Penelope Kohl, a junior, said she enjoys hanging out with everyone.
