The ICWI (Insurance Company of the West Indies Limited) Table Tennis Champions League will serve up three matches tonight at the Eastern Regional Indoor Sports Arena, Tacarigua.
The race will be the biggest sporting event in the country so far since last year’s edition of the same tournament that ended in mid-March.
Six teams will compete for a total prize of $20,000.
Half an hour after the opening ceremony at 6pm, the QPCC (Queen’s Park Cricket Club) Parkites will take on WASA Club, while the Solo Crusaders will oppose the North East/West Team and Arima Table Tennis Club will take on Legends United.
The Parkites won the title last year and will again start favorites Shermar Britton and Derron Douglas, who were ranked No. 2 and No. 4, respectively, at the end of 2019, the last year of the rankings before the arrival of Covid-19, in the lineup theirs.
However, each club will be represented by two teams this year and the strength of their second team will also be very important in determining the final result.
Former national champions Reeza Burke, Anthony “Sandfly” Brown and Curtis Humphreys are playing for North-East/West, Crusaders and WASA respectively.
And some players from Barbados and Guyana will also compete in the tournament, which will see the teams play each other twice on Wednesday and Thursday evenings over the next three weeks.
Action kicks off at 6.15pm tomorrow with Legends against Crusaders, while Parkites take on North-West/West and Arima take on WASA.
