City Life Org – Spanish Harlem Dance Festival 2022

Spanish Creative Movement Festival in Harlem is a dance festival that celebrates the culture of Latinos in America and their place in it, reflecting the diversity that Latin American culture embodies. It will feature nine (9) dance artists with hybrid choreographic practices who carry stories of the lived cultural experiences of Latin Americans in America. Those danced stories will bring the visual power of storytelling to life with performative elements. The festival is dedicated to the multicultural nature of New York City and boldly responds to the blurring of cultures from different diasporas; while celebrating and examining the impact of Latinos and immigrants on America as a country of mixed cultures. This September 2022.

Unfolding emotions in motion, the festival has four components:

party: Dance show on stage, seven choreographic works with 22 dancers will take the stage from September 15th to September 17th

The choreographers talk: post-show conversations between dance creators and audience, conducted by special guests

Dancing Strokes Exhibition: This exhibition plays with theoretical concepts of movement, light and rhythm; and how those elements can insinuate movement and create the impression of “action.” It invites the viewer to find the connection between a live dance aesthetic and that reflected in the artwork. Curated by Gustavo Fernandez from September 7th to September 18th. The exhibition will take over the lobby and gallery at El Barrio’s Artspace.

The dance community: A group of dance workshops and wellness activities: September 14 at Dance Studio (Low Level El Barrio’s Artspace). 4.30pm Kids Jazz / 6pm Yoga Beginners / 7.30pm Tango Beginners. Workshop Coordinator Yvanhova Figueroa.

The festival is organized and produced by the Dance 10 Project, a hybrid collective of dancers, choreographers, producers who stage dance/physical-theatre performances with a unique language that evokes a poetic dimension of Hispanic drama. Bringing years of leadership experience and knowledge of producing, staging, and promoting dance events, the festival is directed by Artistic Director and Choreographer Elliott Ortiz. The Dance10 Project aims to provide opportunities for positive exposure and career advancement in dance creation to underrepresented, especially Latinos, dance artists of color, and LGBTQ members. And, to expand the creative force around contemporary dance by increasing audience knowledge.
