Cricket West Indies and the Caribbean Premier League have launched a new cricket format called The 6IXTY–Cricket’s Power Game.
The first edition of THE 6IXTY will take place from August 24-28 in St Kitts and Nevis at Warner Park.
It will see the men’s and women’s teams compete in a new 60-ball tournament, which is sponsored by SKYEXCH.
The new format brings a host of new innovations to T10 cricket aimed at making the game faster and more action-packed.
Among the innovations are each team hitting six wickets and teams unlocking a Power Play by hitting two sixes in the first 12 balls.
“THE 6IXTY has come about because of a close collaboration between CPL and CWI that is the way forward. I am very excited about the innovation, excitement and fun it will bring to fans,” said CWI President Ricky Skerritt.
“This is a hugely exciting moment for both the CPL and Cricket West Indies as we create a tournament that will see cricket fans get closer to the game. There will be world-class men’s and women’s cricketers taking part in a fantastic event for the Caribbean and this, combined with the latest innovations, signals a great moment for all West Indian cricket fans,” said Pete Russell , chief executive of Hero CPL.
Here are the new rules for THE 6IXTY
• Each batting team has six wickets – at the fall of the sixth wicket they are all out
• Each batting team has two ends in PowerPlay. They can unlock a third PowerPlay by hitting two sixes in the first 12 balls. This PowerPlay extra can be obtained anytime between versions 3-9
• 30 balls will be placed from one end before the action switches to the other end for the final 30 balls
• The 30 balls will be bowled as 5 separate overs, with no bowler able to take more than 2 overs for the innings.
• If the teams do not pass their ball within the allotted time, one member of their team leaves the field for the last six balls
• Fans will vote on the timing of a “Mystery Hit” where a shot cannot be dropped by the player
