Former Chicago Fire and Club América soccer star Cuauhtémoc Blanco was being investigated for alleged ties to Mexican organized crime, according to reports leaked by Mexico’s Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA).
The soccer legend, who played in three World Cups for the Mexican national team, currently serves as governor of the state of Morelos in south-central Mexico.
In January of this year, an investigation was opened against Mr. Blanco by the Attorney General of Morelos, after a photo of him appeared with suspected leaders of local organized crime groups. Newly leaked information reveals that Mexico’s military intelligence was also looking for the governor.
According to reports from SEDENA and the Mexican Navy that were uncovered by the Guacamaya hacking collective and shared with reporters at Anímal Político, the government and associates of Governor Blanco are suspected of having ties to four Mexican organized crime groups: Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) , the largest in the country. drug cartel; Los Rojos, a faction of the Gulf Cartel; Guerreros Unidos, a criminal syndicate operating in southern Mexico linked to the disappearance of 43 students in 2014; and Comando Tlahuica, a criminal group that split from Guerreros Unidos.
The 2019 investigation also reported that 18 mayors from Morelos, seven lower house lawmakers, nine judges, one senator and two lawyers were also linked to organized crime figures.
“It is possible that the criminal group calling itself Comando Tlahuica is in collaboration with the current governor of Morelos because of their interest in his security,” read a Mexican Navy intelligence report from February 27, 2019 that was leaked by the newspaper Animal investigation. Politico as part of leaked documents.
Additionally, a leaked SEDENA report says that Mr. Blanco allegedly authorized Comando Tlahuica to manage the city of Cuernavaca’s water and sewer systems when he was mayor there from 2015 to 2018.
Earlier this year, the soccer star was in hot water after local news paper El Sol de México published photos of Mr. Blanco posing with three suspected leaders of the CJNG and Guerreros Unidos who were allegedly at a “security meeting” held at the governor’s house in Cuernavaca.
The photo is said to have been taken from the cell phone of Esther Yadira Huitrón Vazquez or Rosario Herrera, also known as “La Jefa”, the alleged leader of the United Warriors.
After her arrest, various photos found on her cell phone were released to the Mexican press.
