The music of nature

The Boston Conservatory Orchestra at Berklee College of Music explores themes of nature and transformation in an Oct. 29 concert at Mechanics Hall. William Grant Still’s deeply expressive Poem for the Orchestra was “inspired by the concept of a world spiritually reborn after a period of darkness and desolation”. Chinese-American composer Tan Dun’s Passacaglia, Secret of Wind and Birds, features unconventional sounds that no “classical” composer would have dreamed of a century ago, such as actual birdsong. Symphony no. 1 (“Titan”) Mahler’s epic is filled with fanfare, more traditional bird calls, a nod to klezmer, and brings “an exciting new approach to universal, nature-based music-making.” Bruce Hangen, conductor.
