The Delaware State Police announces the retirement of Major Matthew Cox on October 21, 2022. Major Cox is a member of the Delaware State Police DSP’s 60th Recruit Class who was hired on January 26, 1990. Retirement His retirement comes after a dedicated career of over 32 years as a loyal public servant to the citizens of Delaware.

In 2000, he was assigned to the Collision Reconstruction Unit (formerly known as the Fatal Accident Investigation Reconstruction Unit). A year later he received the rank of sergeant. After serving ten years as a member of the Collision Reconstruction Unit, he was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to Patrol Troop 2. He is credited with developing innovative enforcement strategies and initiatives that resulted in a reduction in fatal crashes, as well as non-fatal collisions. In 2017, he was promoted to the rank of Captain and appointed Director of the Road Operations Section, where he remained steadfast in improving road safety. During this time, DSP experienced a fifteen-year decrease in motorcycle and pedestrian crashes, as well as a reduction in fatal crashes. In 2019, he was appointed Director of the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR, commonly referred to as Internal Affairs). Shortly thereafter, he earned the prestigious rank of Major, where he oversaw the day-to-day operations for New Castle County and continued his involvement in many aspects of highway safety. Major Cox has rewritten policies and legislation in addition to developing traffic safety awareness programs for citizens. In September 2022, he was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award in Highway Safety in Law Enforcement, which recognizes individual law enforcement officers who have made outstanding lifetime contributions to highway safety. While managing the New Castle County operations, Major Cox was also the officer in charge of the Delaware State Police Pipelines and Batteries. Additionally, he was a dedicated piper within the Delaware State Police and Drum Corps.

Major Cox has served DSP and the citizens of Delaware with distinction. During his tenure at Executive Headquarters, Major Cox has overseen many special events and dignitaries while excelling in his role as the New Castle District Operations Officer. He will be greatly missed by his DSP family and we wish him and his family all the best in their next chapter,” said Delaware State Police Superintendent Colonel Melissa Zebley.
