In an exclusive conversation for Magazine Absolute RioACTOR Diego Goulart shares his artistic journey, from his first steps in school theater, to his current projects. With a career on the rise, Diego reveals how art transformed his life and continues to shape him as an artist and human being.
Lou Amaral: Diego, how did the desire to be an actor awaken in your heart?
Diego Goulart: I’ve always had a connection to art, whether through poetry or music. But it all started when, to help an art teacher who had asked me for a favor at school, I started attending the theater group. Little did I know that this would be one of the best decisions of my life.
In the beginning I was quite rebellious and I didn’t really understand the “rules” of the scene. Professor Cléo Aguiar He saw potential in me and, even with my stubbornness, never gave up. She put a lot of pressure on me (laughs), but over time I became her right-hand man and the group took part in the “Festival de Teatro nas Escolas” in Brasília.
So, ironically or, who knows, a sign of DeusI won a full scholarship to the Dulcina de Moraes Faculty of Arts. There I realized that the universe had plans for me and I finally found myself in life. Art saved me and continues to save me every day.
Lou Amaral: What work have you done and what has changed you the most?
Diego Goulart: I participated in several projects, such as “Malhação – Vidas Brasileiras” from 2018 to 2019, where I played Cláudio. I also participated in “Malhação: Pro Dia Nascer Feliz” and in the series “Bíblica”. In cinema, I played Jorge in the feature film O Diabo Mora Aqui, an award-winning horror film that aired on Canal Brasil and Net Now Online I participated in a web series where I played the character Bernardo, the villain of season 2 of the teenage series “Radical Years”.
In the theater I highlight “Carne Nova no Pedaço”, “Amazon: Guerreiros da Amazônia” and the productions of “Paixão de Cristo” in Vassouras and Arcos da Lapa, in Rio I recently participated in two seasons of “Um Dia Any” on HBO Max, as Thundercat.
All the works transformed me in some way, but some were particularly memorable. The Devil Lives Here gave me my first film role and opened doors Globo.
In 2016, I received a wonderful gift and with it, the biggest challenge of my career: to play Jesus Christ in the biggest show in Rio de Janeiro. My first protagonist on stage and the biggest. To study Jesus so up close, the immersion in this story of faith, love and hope was very intense. And when I say that art saves, I’m not kidding. This part is my example. Right on this show accepted Jesus and I really opened up to spirituality. It was definitely the most profound change.
The last telenovela I did, besides giving me the opportunity for my first international trip, blessed me in an extremely noble way. In Record and Series output I knew that my wife, Rafaela Sampaioalso an actress at home, was at the end of her pregnancy so they tried to find a character for me and they succeeded. So, I entered “Queen of Persia” with a contract that lasted 7 months. How can I not thank a company that helped me raise my son?
We are now talking about MAX production (old HBO), “Every day“, I was called after a 10-hour test (I learned a lot during the test workshop) to participate as “Bandit 3”. However, during the script reading, the director liked the chemistry I had with the actor so much. who played the character Seu Chapa, who decided to transform all appearances of criminals into a single character. Thundercat. Almost 5 years later season 1we were gifted with season 2, and with a bigger budget. Furthermore, Thundercat He grew into the plot and became the right-hand man of the series’ central character. THE the 2nd season “Any Day” gave me probably my biggest contract financially and it came at a time when I needed it the most. I was literally at rock bottom and thanks to them I got back on my feet.

Lou Amaral: You are married to actress Rafaela Sampaio. How was this love encounter?
Diego Goulart: We became closer through the promotion of one of my songs. Then we did a couple in a web series. Despite being a cliché, the famous saying “it was meant to be” fits our story very well. Our meeting is divine, God prepared everything with much love and affection! Rafaela is an extraordinary person, really different. We just love this story.
Lou Amaral: You have a beautiful baby, Noah. How has the experience of fatherhood been?
Diego Goulart: Since I was 20 years old, I dreamed of becoming a father. I wanted to become a father early so that I could have a relationship with my son similar to the one I have with my father: playing, playing sports, studying and dreaming together. My father is my best friend and I hope I am my son’s best friend.
It has not been easy; Actually, it’s quite complicated. When Rafa and I start getting used to a cycle, Noah advances in age and we have to learn the new cycle, the new rhythm, the new discoveries of the baby, which end up being new discoveries for us too.
Despite the difficulties, it is a blessing, an incredible feeling to be a father, to have your family and to see our evolution. It is indescribable. We are only succeeding because we are great partners. Rafa and I are 100% for each other!
Lou Amaral: What are your future projects?
Diego Goulart: I have several projects in progress. I am writing a drama series together with Eduardo Segura four years ago. We are perfecting the project to raise enough resources to produce it in order to bring it to the air.
I have mine too solo music project and I would like to release more songs, but there is no sponsorship. Furthermore, I have a great desire to be part of the cast of “Reis”, a Record/Serella production.
Lou Amaral: What motivational message would you leave for those starting your career?
Diego Goulart: Be persistent and disciplined, as these virtues shorten the time for something to blossom in your career. Be omnipresent; to be where the arts breathe: at cultural events, film premieres, shows, evenings. Make real friends – not because of interest in the profession, but because good friendships always find ways to help each other.
Networking is vital, but don’t make it a jungle. No one appreciates a self-serving sycophant. Cultivate honest relationships. We, the actors, are scientists of art, researchers of the human spirit. So study fervently and read more than anything. Watch movies and series with attentive eyes, discovering every detail, understanding what moves each scene. Immerse yourself in the history of the theater, because the theater has always been and will be our strong foundation.
And finally, dream. “Only the dreamer is truly alive to win.”
Lou Amaral: Finally, what phrase would you say defines you?
Diego Goulart: “Happiness is only true when shared.” (“Happiness is only real when separated.”) This phrase is from the movie Into the Wild, one of my favorite movies!
