Diego Martin has a world-class cricket venue – Imbert

Acting Prime Minister Colm Imbert says the country’s newest first class seat at Diego Martin is “first class”.

Mr Imbert was on hand as the Diego Martin Sports Complex hosted its first day of first-class cricket on Wednesday when the T&T Red Force hosted the Leeward Islands Hurricanes.

“This is a first-class, world-class facility and that’s why I’m here. I am very happy to be here with great cricketers and personalities and I am very happy to have a match of this calibre. The sky is the limit,” he told CWI Media.

Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board President Azim Bassarath also praised the quality of the facility.

“Diego Martin is a community ground and we are very happy that Cricket West Indies has given first-class status to the ground,” he said.

“We’re looking forward to the first game down there and we know everything will be in place on Wednesday morning to kick off. Nothing needs to be done at the stadium. The ground is in perfect condition ,” added Mr. Bassarath.

The Leeward Islands closed on 308 for 7 with Kieran Powell (139) hitting his maiden century at the venue.

The Diego Martin Sports Complex, which hosted matches in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in January 2022, will host three matches in the West Indies Championship.
